The newscast required me to read in Spanish. I took the time to practice with my colleague to ensure I pronounced each word properly before the newscast.
The Apache trout became delisted as an endangered species. The United States Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland made the announcement at an event in Mesa.
As a broadcast reporter, I conducted interviews with several of the speakers present, including James Goughnour of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission. I also collected important b-roll, which would later be edited for the newscast.
The annual Miss Navajo Nation beauty pageant took place over the Labor Day weekend in Window Rock. Unlike a regular pageant, participants here showed off their skills in sheep butchering and food preparation.
Alongside my other colleagues, I traveled to Window Rock where I observed the competition and interviewed all six participants. I also spoke with the 2023-2024 Miss Navajo Nation. After the first part of the competition, I returned back into the newsroom to write a script and produce a video.
The American Red Cross in Phoenix held an event encouraging those in the Hispanic community to donate blood. This comes as the organization reveals the high demand of type O blood.
I traveled to the American Red Cross Phoenix location where I interviewed speakers and captured b-roll of Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs. The final video was edited in one day and featured my editing and voiceover.
Many local residents attended a rally to advocate for tenants’ rights during eviction proceedings. The rally pushed for right to counsel legislation and featured Arizona State Senator Anna Hernandez.
The video package required me to walk to Phoenix City Hall, stay for the entirety of the rally and conduct interviews. I later returned to the newsroom to write a script and edit a video for a newscast scheduled that same day.
Toss the Tusk centered on educating people about the illegal ivory trade and encouraged people to turn in any ivory items they may have in their possession. The event, taking place at the Phoenix Zoo, highlighted the dangers of animal poaching.
Besides doing interviews at the Phoenix Zoo, Toss the Tusk gave me the chance to capture video of a live elephant in its enclosure.
Over at the Mexican consulate in Phoenix, people can access the Ventanillas de Salud program to support people and their healthcare needs.
Alongside my colleagues, I learned about the program and got he chance to speak with the Consul General of Mexico in Phoenix. I eventually put together a video package showing the significance of the Ventanillas de Salud program.
A group of women and government officials gathered a local summit in Phoenix to discuss solutions to tackling climate issues.
I attended the event to capture highlights and speak with those deeply involved with caring about environmental issues. The final video package required editing and a voiceover.
With Proposition 314 being a controversial initiative on 2024 ballot, many voiced their opposition towards it, including members of Barrio Defense Committees.
I took the time to understand both people who supported and opposed the proposition, including interviewing Arizona State Senator John Kavanagh via Zoom. As part of the newscast, I also took part in a live standup.
Valleywise Health and Nourish Phoenix formed a partnership that brought a mobile health clinic to the local community.

The United States Air Force sent out an Environmental Impact Statement letting people in Arizona and New Mexico know about a military training proposal. This proposal is seeking to expand and modify flight activity above forest areas and where rural communities reside. However, many people, including those from New Mexico, have expressed concern about the environmental and health impacts brought forth by this proposal.
I traveled to New Mexico with a colleague to talk with people who live in or near Silver City. Over the course of the three-day trip, I spoke with veterans and others who have expressed worries about the military training proposal. I worked diligently to put together a final broadcast package showing the interviews and b-roll of Silver City and nearby forest areas.

Hank the Ballpark Pup, became a prominent unofficial animal mascot in Major League Baseball after being found as a stray in Maryvale, Arizona. His death led to the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team remembering him and recalling memories of the pooch.
After Hank’s death, I reached out to the Milwaukee Brewers to see the effect the dog had on the organization and baseball fans. A quick email exchange led to me talking to Brewers’ Senior Vice President Tyler Barnes about Hank.
In a legal case involving a newborn baby with brain damage, a Maricopa County jury ruled that Banner Health would have to pay over $31 million in a verdict. The news spot features the voice of the law firm partner involved in the case and a statement from Banner Health.
The news of the lawsuit called for me to reach out to the law firm partner involved in the case. Furthermore, I contacted Banner Health to receive a statement that it disagreed with the verdict of the case.
Arizona residents and other convention goers gather in downtown Phoenix for the 2023 edition of Phoenix Fan Fusion. The news spot features interviews with attendees as part of a field reporting effort.
All interviews took place outside of the Phoenix Convention Center. With the help of my editor, I talked to attendees using a Zoom recorder. We returned to the newsroom to put the audio into Adobe Audition and to create the scripts for the day.
Gallego kicks off Senate campaign with weekend tour of Arizona | January 29, 2023
Democratic Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego launched his series of campaign events as he sought support for a Senate seat. One of those campaign stops took place at Grant Park in Phoenix.
I joined my editor and used a sound recorder to collect interviews from Gallego and other attendees at the event. I also took the picture featured on the web copy.
The 2022 election in Arizona called for KJZZ to keep residents informed about the various propositions on the ballot. This feature includes the voices of those in support and opposition of a proposal to change the line of succession to become the next state governor.
As my first feature story, I took the time to interview the state senators who helped put the proposition on the ballot over Zoom. I also sought out a voice of opposition as I discovered there were no arguments against the initiative on a local pamphlet.
